V.A. Back to Front (1977-1983) Volume One RE-UP

~
I originally pulled this post when it received two comments for 43 downloads. I can't apologize, since it's an almost  reasonable response to a totally unreasonable situation. After all, a good post is worth a good word in return, here or anywhere else. I certainly appreciate when people just stop long enough to say a quick 'thanks (or 'danka' or 'gracias') but it's those moments when people actually communicate their own ideas about the music that's been posted, those moments bring a huge fuckin' grin to my face.

So, regular commenters - Nazz, Big Scott, Brushback, ViaCom..., Doug, Revolutionary Bum, Nick, Longy, Snatzo, CallPastorJerkface, LemonFlag, Woodworker, Sock Monkey, Barrie B, Biopunk, Johnny Hank, Rinjo Njori!, JBull49, Roy Pearl, Justin Crash, Chris Y., DaveGeek, Sociologian, Dave Sez, Roberto, KennyHell77* (and that's just a review of the last week or so - there's MANY more regulars who rock!) and anyone else who actually give a shit about human communication - this one's for you!
*P.S. Looking at that lengthy, and admittedly incomplete, list of regulars make me realize that this blog has it pretty good. That doesn't mean I won't say something if the comments grow really sparse but maybe I'll try to say it just a little better next time!

When  Incongito Records began this limited-edition series back in 1993, they made an honest attempt to contact as many of these late seventies/early eighties bands as they could to secure rights. That attention to detail  gave this series a reputation as one of the best in the torrent of punk retrospectives that the nineties unleashed.  Compiler Peter Parzinger tilted this series towards wilder, cruder punk rock from all over the Western world with bands like K9's, The Chosen Few and Mittageisen. Thankfully, he also lets the series ratchet down the aggro for the fun "Eddie's New Shoes" by Blitz Boys, The Letters light but catchy-as-hell, "Don't Want You Back" as well as the Nasty Facts' power-pop number, "Drive My Car".

I wanted to let you know how awesome this blog is. I would mention how I got here, but I honestly can't remember, it's almost like it just magically appeared in my browser. I listened to a couple things and loved what I heard, so I listened to some more and loved that, and now I'm digging through all the older posts.

Anyway, as I was listening to some of the songs on here, I wanted to see if you had mentioned Against Me! or their latest album White Crosses. It's just that the music on here made me remember that album and how much I loved it. Thought you might be interested. There's also a different version called Black Crosses that contains alternate studio takes and acoustic versions that's worth a listen too.

In any event thanks for all the awesome music, though I've barely scratched the surface.

  2. Just a quick note-
The Simulators were just about the first NYHC band- "Loud Fast Rules" of course becoming the motto for so many bands (including the original name of Soul Asylum). Patrick Mack was the lead singer and was one of the first people to have passed away from AIDS (this was really early on).
Harley Flanagan was the drummer (he was about 12)- he later of course went on to be a fixture in the NY scene with the Cro-Mags.

I actually saw them at the old Max's Kansas City - lord knows what year- i musta been about 15.

  3. That Nasty Facts song is one of the coolest punk/pop songs ever.

  4. I'd love to write some comment on the Back to front compilation. Seems like the link is gone. Would you mind to supply a new link ? Thx very much.

  5. I almost have to set aside two or three nights instead of one to blog and keep up with the regular ones around I do see. Well this is all good information thanks Brushback, Naz and et al. If someone can get another one on this label The Wombells - 'Fast and Bouncy' let 'er rip.

I did like the lead-off single "I was a teenage anarchist", I haven't listened that much to the White Crosses.

    Nazz
I remember them from that NY Thrash tape on ROIR.
    Thanks for the update!

    Brushback
"Get To You"from the single is pretty cool too.

    I'm not there yet...

It is hard to blog AND follow your favourite bloggers, isn't it?
I'll keep my eye out for The Wombells.

  7. I didn't get here in time to get the download, but I see that "Don't Want You Back" by the Letters is on there. I have heard two songs from the Letters- Don't Want You Back, and Nobody Loves Me. Both of them are classic power-pop. Does anyone know any more about the Letters. Did they have a full length or just 7"s. I would love to hear more by them.

As always- thanks Jeffen. I have said it before, and I will continually say it....this is one of my go to websites whenever I get onto the computer. I have a radio show here in Juneau and I have given you a couple of shout-outs for people to check you out. I also linked to your website from my show's facebook page (especially after I play "I Love Suzan" 4 times in one night- thanks once again for that one).

  8. Dang! Missed it! I understand your frustration, though; do what you gotta do, but keep up the good work!

  9. Is it just me or do The Automatiks owe just a little bit of a shout-out to Nasty Facts?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Don't really understand your frustration about the lack of comments. If people download it they must be interested in what you upload. Sure I can write a thank you if that makes you fell better. But you should know that if people download it they probably like what you're uploading. Thank you for effort and good work!

  11. I was thinking, and I'm not much of a computer genius so I may be way off base, but why not make the downloads only available to people who email and request them from you?

  12. I feel your pain Jeffen. Have you checked out CommentLuv? I'm not sure how it works exactly, but I thing it requires a comment to download. (http://comluv.com/download/commentluv-blogger/).
I've spent all day looking at my Google/Blogger analytics trying to figure out how many times people are leeching my links- mind telling me where to look?

  15. I don't blame ya man, I hadn't been on the site in a fwe days and seen this set, chances are I would have downloaded AND left a comment....the "big deal" that someone alluded to is quite simply common courtesy/graciousness...the guy isn't (I don't think) asking you to do a full review of the album, just a few words to acknowledge his work, and it IS work. These albums don't just fall out of the sky, people like this guy Jeffen have to provide them, and what the fuck could be easier than a simple "thank you"? I'm an infant at the blogging gmae myself, but I fully understand what he means when I see 70 downloads and zero comments and the like....Come on....we're here to SHARE this, and YOUR part (in return for a great album that you might never hear otherwise) is maybe 10 seconds of your time to state a word of appreciation? Maybe I'm to old to understand these people, but I guarentee you I ALWAYS say a few words for a download....my thought is things would go much smoother if we all did

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hello Jeff. Shame I've missed this one but to tell you the truth mate,I don't blame you one bit. There are far too many ungrateful bastards in this world - especially here in blog world. Personally I was lucky on my old one and got quite a few comments.

Funny enough I've just left a comment on a blog (Gothic Addiction) commenting that it should have more comments.

It won't be like this when the I Am Chimp is out I tell ya :)

  18. Jeffen - I visit a few times a week and enjoy your posts. I download infrequently. I leave a comment about as infrequently mainly because it takes me ten minutes to log in and leave a comment. Sometimes it takes longer. Other blogger blogs don't take as much effort to leave a comment. Do you have some sort of cookie ID software running with this blog? It is often sluggish in loading and sometimes I need to close other applications just to open your blog. And I have similar experiences on a few different computers. Kinda strange.

I'm about to leave this and I notice the word verification block is blank. So I'll have to copy this, back out of comments and try again. How many people try to leave a comment and tire of waiting for the process to work?

Wow. Blogger just kicked me out entirely and I had to start over. Now at 20 minutes to post this. I suspect you don't hear from many people who are frustrated to just leave a thank you.

In any event, keep up the good works. I'm enjoying the visits and I'm certain many others enjoy it as well. - E

  19. Thanks for putting the link back up mate. I shall give this one a listen a little later.

  20. @ E-Mann I've noticed the issue with the missing word verification word myself more than a few times. A good way around it is to preview your comment first. For some reason, if you do that it magically appears.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've not d/loaded anything from here lately but I'll happily leave a comment - as I like reading the others!

For a bit of perspective check out the prolific work at

    http://mythkoz-areyouexperienced.blogspot.com/

who hardly ever gets a comment

+ my 2 penny's worth is...... the "misspent youth" post on my blog has almost reached the 200 download mark without one comment

I sometimes get a bit disheartened but then there's a great comment from a band member in the e-mail box & it's all worth while again

(pretty sure we've had this cyber conversation before so I'll stop there)

  22. Great looking comp - most (probably all) of this is unfamiliar to e so I can't really say more except that I am looking forward to listening to it.

Don't be too discouraged at the lack of comments. I too have a blog (http://timeonmyhands-yb.blogspot.com/) where I post playlists of downloadable songs and while my last few posts had over 60 dl's, there were no comments at all.

    ReplyDelete
  23. E-man, I blame google. Hell, I now have to use google chrome to even read any comments my blog might receive. They don't let bloggers know before they make changes. I guess that's the overall price of a free service.

It's definitely more difficult for bloggers to keep up with blogs they follow as the Chrome format is not as in your face and doesn't grab attention easily.

Enough moaning, this comp looks great. Thanks Jeffen

  24. Great looking Comp.
Thanks a lot for the posts. It's really appreciated. Even if sometimes the comments aren't up, the fact is that people clearly appreciate the effort/ material.
Don't let lack of response ruin your life!

  28. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this blog. Like the first commenter notes, I don't know how I came across your blog originally but I'm very happy I did. I used to DJ a college radio rock program in Victoria BC a long time ago, and really appreciate all the classic Canadian records you somehow manage to post. I remember playing some of these on vinyl and to hear them again is a blast - not to mention the stuff I didn't even know existed but now love.

  31. i'm a bit late to this, but i appreciate what you do here. comments aren't really a metric i'd worry about - i post my stuff in my black hole and get views but little else. if it helps, i'm mired in work and only stop by once a week these days and haven't listened to anything in ages, and that happens to everyone at times.

i downloaded, i'll listen and check back in to comment.

  33. Great post, love the Nasty Facts "Drive My Car". Sorry to hear your comments have been on the downside, I can totally relate. I have several posts on my blog that have hundreds of downloads without any comments whatsoever. It is a bit discouraging. I throw a lot of different shit out there to see what sticks, and without any comments I can only assume they downloaded it and think the post was shit. Anyhow, thank you for re-posting this, your effort is appreciated.

  34. First off, thanks for the outpouring of comments. It's much appreciated and as I said. there's a schwack of great commenters who visit here regularily and maybe sometimes I get spoiled by that.

God, that makes my blood boi. Not only is that blog you mentioend really great but your blog, as I've said before, deserves some kind of award for historical archiving. If I wasn't an obsessive blogger I'd d/l every single thing you post (and you can't say that about too many blogs).
One of the reasons I do sometimes snap is the whole music blog culture of taking-without-commenting, which I want to correct not just for myself but for others.

Comments are an important metric to me and thanks for always having something to add to the mix.

  35. Just want to let you know that I don't often comment, though I should, cause I'm so new to music I feel like I have nothing meaningful to contribute. Everybody's knowledge on here intimidates me. : ) That said, I'll try to comment in the future and I hugely appreciate your work. Cheers!
