Rat Scabies' White Cats (1979)

In the brief period The Damned were broken-up (late 77 to mid '78) punk's greatest beat-keeper, Rat Scabies formed the psych-pop-punk band The White Cats. While they never released anything they did record two great Peel sessions, which we present for your listening pleasure.

White Cats Peel Sessions link is in the comments

Speaking of comments, what do you make of Rat's ever-so-brief "solo career"?

These Peel Sessions have been donated to MRML by estimable Crimewave, give him thanks and check out his band's webpage.

  2. Having started play drums in '77,obviously Rat was god for me,and still is(erm drumwise only...)never tired to listen to old Damned stuff and still find his style unique and inspiring...having said that, the world is full of great drummers, even better than Rat,but no one ever had his attitude and his manic faces when playing, that's what counts for me...and many thanks to Crimewave...

  3. The best punk drummer of them all,i met him at 100 club where he was playing with the members, i told him he was the best punk drummer ever, also asked for a drum stick but he said he only had 4!finally asked if he would go back to the Damned he said not while Capt was there! brilliant post by the way

  5. These White Cats Peel Sessions are so common that I think nearly every blog has posted them, but thanks. I've never seen that photo though.

What I'd like to see is the White Cats 2 song demo that used to go around the tape trade circles back in the day posted. I lost my copy years ago.

  6. Cool. Had these on a cassette tape. Pretty exciting stuff I think, in a trashy kind of way. Thanks!!! Now, with Rat's and The Captain's sessions posted, is there hope for the Tanz Der Youth Peel sessions?

I guess there are drummers better than Rat but as a Punk Rock Drummer he stands out for keeping things rocking.

I used to kind of worry about whether something had been posted elsewhere till I realized that it doesn't really matter that much. I mean 160 people took the WC in 48 hours, so obviously there's still some new ears to hear.
That being said, If you ever find that two song demo I hope you post it over at NA.

    Dr. Hank
    I'll look into it!
